In 1971, at the invitation of Bishop Felixberto C. Flores, D. D. Bishop of the Diocese of Agana, Monsignor Bernard Cummins, Superintendent of Schools of the Archdiocese of San Francisco, came to Guam to study the Catholic schools and to make recommendations for improvement. A result of this visit was the consolidation of the junior high programs of Cathedral Grade School and St. Jude on the latter’s campus. St. Jude eventually became a diocesan school under the title Bishop Baumgartner Junior High School, in honor of its founder.

In 1986, significant changes took place within the two schools - the transfer of grade six from Cathedral grade school to Bishop Baumgartner Junior High School and the emergence of the new school, Bishop Baumgartner Middle School.

Throughout the years, other significant events and changes developed. Both school were blessed with intelligent and dedicated administrators who had the foresight to envision the Catholic Schools of the future. The following decades were to be periods of intense growth and development. Both Schools were to expand their enrollment, curriculum, physical plants and overall the quality of education. For many years, both have been and are fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, receiving excellent commendations from accrediting teams. But the ultimate proof of the quality of education of Cathedral grade school and Bishop Baumgartner Middle School lies in the thousands of men and women throughout the years who have attended or graduated from there and have moved on into adult community taking with them Christian values that they have learned and making powerful impacts on the quality of life.

In time, many factors were to contribute to the wisdom of merging the two schools. Much of the impetus arose from the severe shortage of space, concern for the safety of the students at Cathedral Grade School, the expansion of the Academy of Our Lady of Guam (CGS and AOLG are both situated on the same campus), the recommendation of the last accreditation report, and the fact that Cathedral Grade School would be the perfect compliment to strengthen Bishop Baumgartner Middle School.

Thus, under the guidance and leadership of Archbishop Anthony S. Apuron D.D., and the collaborative leadership of the Catholic Board of Education, the administrators of BBMS, CGS and AOLG, the Administrators of the Sisters of Mercy, parents and teachers, another vision has been realized. The merged, kindergarten through eighth grade, is now called BISHOP BAUMGARTNER MEMORIAL CATHOLIC SCHOOL, under the administration of Sister Mary Emiline Artero, RSM as president, Mrs. Rita D. Duenas, as principal and Sister Elizabeth Uncangco, RSM as vice-principal
